2018 COLUMBINE MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Philosophy

As coaches we believe that Middle School Volleyball provides the opportunity for players to develop strong fundamental volleyball skills along with increasing their knowledge about the sport.  Participation is one of our main areas of focus.  Playing time will be determined by the coaching staff and will be as equitable as possible. We will promote a team atmosphere in all aspects of our program.  All players will be expected to respect and encourage teammates not only during volleyball activities but at school as well.  Players will also show respect and cooperation to all coaches, teachers, and administrators as well as represent Columbine Middle School with the highest integrity.

Academic Expectations

  • Eligibility: Teachers will post grades by noon on Monday.  Coaches will receive an eligibility list every Monday.  Students failing one or more classes will be ineligible to participate in games that week Monday through Saturday. If a student is ineligible for two consecutive weeks, then they may be removed from the team.
  • Wednesday Study Hall: Any player who has a “D” or an “F” on eligibility, will be asked to report to study hall on Wednesdays from 2:35-3:45pm.  Players will report to a designated classroom no later than 2:45. Players are encouraged to bring all school work and personal belongings to study hall, they will not be allowed to return to their lockers or leave the campus without parent permission.  Players are allowed to bring a light snack to study hall to have before practice.
  • We expect players to work as hard in the classroom as they do on the volleyball court.

Concussion Test

  • Every 7th grade player (and 8th grade players who did not play last year) will be given a computer based impact concussion test. 6th graders that participated in cross country or wrestling will need to retake the test.
  • It is the policy of Columbine Middle School that players suffering head injuries or concussions may not participate in practice or games until there is a written release from a physician.

Equipment

  • Players will be issued a game jersey that is to be returned at the last game of the season.
  • Players are responsible for having kneepads, black shorts (style will be determined by each individual team), and tennis shoes.
  • Players will be asked to wear nice dress clothes to school on game days (Friday for Saturday games).
  • We will need parents and family members attending games to help with line judging.

Practice

We will have practice every day Monday through Friday.  All practice schedules and game schedules will be posted on the webpage as soon as teams have been formed. Coaches will determine practice schedules for game days and inform parents through the webpage or letters home about any changes in the schedule. Practices may be cancelled due to holidays or other scheduling conflicts. NOTE: Players attending late practice must leave campus after school. Girls are not allowed to hang out in the building or in the practices of other teams. Practices are closed to the public (no family members or friends).

Attendance

  • Players will be required to attend and participate in all practices.
  • Players will be given a warning for their 1st unexcused absence.
  • A player receiving a 2nd unexcused absence will be required to set up a meeting with their parents and coaches.  This meeting will be used to discuss a plan to improve attendance and possible consequences.  A player will not play until the coach meets with parents/guardians.
  • Players must have written parent permission or a written doctor’s note to be excused from practice. If a student is excused from school (sick, out of town, etc.), then they are excused and no written notice is needed.
  • Absences (excused or unexcused) may affect playing time.

Away Games

  • Teams playing first will dress out at CMS before leaving the school. Teams playing second can dress out at the site of the match.
  • We recommend that players bring a small snack with water to have prior to the game.
  • Ineligible or suspended players will not be able to participate. They will not be allowed to travel for away games.
  • All Players ride the bus to the away destination. Parents wanting to take players with them following an away game must sign them out with a coach prior to leaving.  Parents are only allowed to sign out their own child unless other arrangements have been made with Mr. Gaber prior to leaving CMS.

League Teams and Rules

Our school league consists of Columbine Middle School, Centennial Middle School, Olathe Middle School, Gunnison Middle School, and Crested Butte Middle School. When away games are played at schools not in our league, we follow their league rules.

General League Rules:

**Matches will be the best 2 out of 3

**Rally score to 25 pts (first team to 25), with the third game to 15, win by 2

**Matches will begin 8 minutes after the conclusion of the previous match

**Each team must provide a line judge for their match. Sometimes we need parents to help with this.

**Please help us out by keeping your area of the bleachers picked up.

Coaches Contact Information

As coaches we have an open door policy and feel that communication is a big part of the success of our program.  We understand that throughout the season players and parents may have questions or concerns about things that are going on.  We encourage players and parents to use the CMS Grievance Policy to get clarification or help to resolve these concerns.  An explanation of the CMS Grievance Policy can be found by clicking on the “Athletics” tab on the left hand side of the page.  Our schedule this season is only about six weeks long and as coaches our practice time and game time is very valuable to us.  It is our goal to devote our entire attention to the players on the court during practice and games and we hope that parents will respect this and voice any questions or concerns they may have at the appropriate time and manner.  We would like as many parents, students, and other spectators to come and watch our games both home and away.  It is important that our players get the encouragement and positive feedback that they deserve for all of their hard work.  We look forward to a great season and hope to see everyone!
